Registering Your Domain Name
There are hundreds of registrars that will register your domain name. Prices vary wildly. Here is Internic's list of ICANN-accredited registrars, which is possibly the most comprehensive one on the Internet.
We do not especially recommend any particular registrar, but here is some general advice:
- Everybody gets occasional spam which offers cheap domain registration and/or hosting. Do not do business with any registrar that ever sent you spam. Obviously these are fly-by-night operators. Otherwise they wouldn't be spamming you.
- Dot-com's, which is what registrars are, come and go. If your registrar simply disappears or is gobbled up by another, control of your domain name may disappear with it. Investigate, study your prospective registrar's website in detail, ask for advice. You are (hopefully) entering into a long-term relationship with your registrar.
- The really shrill ones ("GET YOUR DOMAIN NAME NOW!!! CLICK HERE!!! THEY'RE GOING FAST!!! CLICK NOW!!!") are probably especially likely to be losers.
- Among registrars, price and quality-of-service seem to have little to do with each other. Verisign, for example, will charge you $20 to $30 per domain name per year and treat you with contempt while they do it. GoDaddy, on the other hand, will provide the exact same service for $6.00 to $9.00 per year, including cheerful tech support, and generally try to give the impression that they appreciate your business. Clearly comparison shopping pays.
